Expression through fashion and style
Most of us know that expressing ourselves is crucial. As humans we need to express what we experience internally in order to connect with our other reality. A form of expression that not a lot of people actually comprehend, is how we dress. Many people think that clothes are simply clothes and their sole purpose is to cover our bodies. I can’t deny that this is a facet of what they’re intended for, but that’s not the full story.
What we wear represents who we are whether we like it or not. I think where a lot of us go wrong is trying to fit in with what we wear. I say this because in its core, your style and what you choose to wear can be a very effective way to authentically express yourself. Do you want to wear bright colours to express joyful radiant feelings within? Do you want to wear all black to express solitude and independence? The beauty about it is you get to decide.
Growing up I always used to think that certain clothes would elevate me and how I was perceived. Like expected, I would wear these clothes, even if I didn’t like them. The sad truth is a lot of us do this, without even realising. Fashion and style (I’m not here to define the two) can be avenues to express…I mean why not? If you’re free enough to put on clothes before you leave the house, why not put something on that validates your internal experience? In simpler terms…Why don’t you where what you want?
Trends exist and will always exist. Before I continue, it’s okay to follow some trends, I mean some are extremely cool, but I think it’s important to strive to be authentic in everything we do. How we dress is a very effective way to do this. Be free in what you wear, own it and don’t feel pressured to dress a certain way based off the fear that what you actually want to wear won’t be accepted.
My passion for fashion is constantly evolving because I’m always figuring out what I like and I stand firm in that. I urge you to take time to figure out what you like wearing. It doesn’t hurt.
